What this means

Compare rail passenger-kilometres per person across countries.

Higher rail passenger-kilometres per person; lower rail passenger-kilometres per person.

Methodology & source

Values are World Bank World Development Indicators IS.RRS.PASG.KM (railways, passengers carried, million passenger-km, from UIC Railisa and OECD) converted to passenger-kilometres per person using SP.POP.TOTL midyear population. This measures rail travel volume, not train frequency or network length. Country rows are joined by ISO 3166-1 alpha-3; regional and income aggregates are excluded. Many UN members have no reported rail passenger series and remain without a value. Map ranks are comparable-sample competition ranks among currently loaded countries.
